A Survey of African Poetry in the London Times, Sunday Times, Financial Times, the Times Literary Supplement 1865-1985

Stephen Watson was born in Cape Town in 1954. He is the author of nine collections of poetry and three books of non-fiction, many of which focused on the city of Cape Town. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Cape Town, where he later became a professor in the English department. Along with teaching and writing, he served as an editor of several books and as the director of the University of Cape Town's Centre for Creative Writing. An ambassador for poetry and diplomat for South African letters, Watson was a significant figure in South African literature. He died in 2011.
