Sol Plaatje, born 1876 in South Africa, was a journalist, politician, and writer. Plaatje was a founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which became the Africal National Congress (ANC). Plaatje devoted his life and his work to the liberation of African peoples from colonial rule and disenfranchisement. He was the first black South African to write a novel in English--the novel Mhudi, in 1919, though it was not published until 1930.
