Pascal Gwala was born in the Natal Province of South Africa in 1946 and became an anti-apartheid poet and activist. Gwala joined the South African Students Organization (SASO) after enrolling at the University of Zuzuland. Gwala also began publishing and working wih the black literary magazine "The Classic" while at university, alongside other significant black writers Oswald Mtshali, Mongane Wally Serote, Njabulo Ndebele, Webster Makaza and Meshack Hlongwane.
