Elisabeth Eybers, born in 1915, was the first Afrikaans woman to publish a book of poetry. She worked as a journalist following her graduation from the University of Witwatersrand. She was considered to be part of one of the "Dertigers," a group of young South African poets of the 1930s. She was the first Afrikaans woman to win the Hertzog Prize for poetry in 1943, and she was awarded the prize a second time in 1971.
