This report was written by Tony Patrick in The Times edition of Tuesday, August 22, 1989 with the title "In their own words". It was about a series of readings at the South Bank Center in London entitled "Putting the L in Word". It featured eight Commonwealth writers from some Caribbean countries, Australia and Africa. Writers who participated were Lorna Goodison, Olive Senior, Ama Ata Aidoo, Gabriel Okara, Antigone Kefala, Fay Zwicky, Archie Weller, and Derek Walcott. The program, according to Patrick intended to explore the different ways these writers had developed in the postcolonial world, building on their absorption of English, American, European and other influences but finding their own voices and becoming increasingly popular in their own country.
