A Young Andre Brink once drove "an iron stake" through the "painted throat" of a sister's favourite doll before burying it in a shallow grave. Remorse over the act drove him further into the arms of the Dutch Reformed Church, whose strict Calvinism bolstered Afrikaner's sense of election and isolation on the southern tip of Africa.
