Rachid Boudjedra

Biography

Rachid Boudjedra, considered by some to be the most important living North African writer, was born in Aïn Beïda, Algeria, in 1941. He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Sorbonne University in France. His first published work was Pour ne plus rever _(To Never See Again_), a book of poems that centers on criticizing the Algerian social structure, a theme that is present throughout his literary works. Boudjedra was exiled from Algeria and given a death sentence for his continued criticism of the government and fled to Morocco and France. His writing is known for its complex, experimental style. In both his work and his personal life, he has criticized aspects of Islamic tradition.
