Wyk van Chris was born in 1957 in Soweto. He studied at Riverlea High School in Riverlea, Johannesburg. A critically acclaimed writer, he is the author of books such as Maria (1966), It is Time To Go Home (1979), Petroleum and the Orphaned Ostrich (1988), Oliver Tambo (1994), My Cousin Thabo (1995), April in the Cape of Storms (1996), The Year of the Tapeworm (1996), In Detention (2007), and others. He won the Olive Schreiner Prize for his poetry collection It Is Time to Go Home (1979). He also won prizes such as the Maskew Miller Longman Award and the Sanlam Literary Award. He died in Johannesburg on 3 October 2014.
