H.J. Pieterse was born in 1960 in Wageningen, Netherlands, while his father was undertaking a doctoral degree. His family returned to South Africa in 1962, where he studied at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa, earning a doctorate. He authored two books of poems: Alruin ('Mandrake') and Duke Bluebeard's Castle. He serves as a professor of creative writing at the University of Pretoria and cofounded "Die Bekbrekers," which organizes poetry slams and monthly poetry readings.
