Sally Ann Murray was born 1961 in Durban, South Africa. She first gained recognition as a poet for her collection Shifting, which won the 1991 Sanlam Award for Literature and the 1989 Arthur Nortje/Vita Award for poetry. She attended the University of Natal, Durban (now University of KwaZulu-Natal) for her MA in South African Literature, and for her Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural and Literary Studies. She serves as Chair of the English Department at the University of Stellenbosch, where she publishes research in autobiography and autoethnography, writing and gender, and creative writing as academic research, among other areas.
