Iman Mersal was born in 1966 in Egypt. She is the author of several books of poetry including, Mamarr Muètim Yasluh li Taèallum al-Raqs (A Dark Passageway is Suitable for Learning to Dance), which was selected as the best book of poetry in 1995 by polls conducted by a number of Egyptian magazines and newspapers. She attended Mansura University where she graduated with a Bacherlor degree. She also received a Master and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Cairo. She went on to become a professor at the University of Alberta.
