Pinkie Mekgwe was born in Botswana. She went to the University of Botswana, where she received her bachelor's in arts. She earned her master's in Critical Theory and her doctorate in Gender and Literary Studies at the University of Sussex. In addition to writing poetry, she has served as an assistant lecturer at Sussex University's School of African and Asian Studies and a visiting lecturer at Malmö University in Sweden. She has also worked in international development in various contexts and as a producer and presenter of "Open Book," an educational, literature-focused radio program aired on a Gaborone-based radio station.
