Lucas Malan was born in 1946 in Modimolle, South Africa. He has published seven volumes of poetry, including 'n Bark vir die ontheemdes (A Barque for the Displaced Ones, 1981), Tydspoor (Time Trail, 1985) and Edenboom (Eden Tree, 1987). He received his bachelor's degree and Higher Education Diploma from the University of Pretoria. He also earned his master's in Afrikaans poetry from the University of the Witwatersrand and his doctorate from the University of Pretoria. He became a lecturer until his retirement in 1997. He died in Cape Town, South Africa in 2010.
