Mwalimu Johnnie MacViban was born in 1955 in Cameroon. He is the author of several books, including An Anecdoted View, An Anecdoted Patchwork, and The Makaru Alternative. He studied journalism at the International School of Journalism and the International Communication Institute in Montreal, Canada. He was incarcerated in 1986 for airing a story on multi-party politics on the radio station Cameroon Calling and was released after five months. He went on to receive the 1994 Editor's Choice Award for Poetry from the US National Library of Poetry. His novel, A Ripple from Abakwa, was also shortlisted for the 2008 EduArt Jane and Rufus Blanchard Award for Fiction.
