Refiloe Mabejane (née Letokoto) was born in South Africa. She went to the University of Johannesburg, where she studied psychology. She also received a master's in international development at the University of East Anglia in the UK. In addition to her performance poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, she works as a professional in international development, specializing in gender issues. She is a trustee and founding member of the nonprofit organization Family Art and Literacy Centre.
