Melissa Kiguwa was born in 1990 in London, UK, to a Haitian father and a Ugandan mother. She is the author of the 2014 poetry collection Reveries of Longing, which covers themes of migration, imperialism, sexuality, and spirituality. The collection was selected as one of This is Africa’s 100 Best Books in fiction, poetry, memoir, and nonfiction. In 2011, Kiguwa graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in political science and received her MSc in media, communication, and development in 2015 from the London School of Economics. She is a 2020 PEN America Emerging Voices Fellow and host of the Grit and Grace podcast in collaboration with the London School of Economics Accelerator for Women Founders.
