Mafika Pascal Gwala was born 1946 in Verulam, South Africa. He is most well known for his involvement in the anti-apartheid and Black Consciousness movement. He is the author of two poetry collections: Jol'iinkomo (1977) and No More Lullabies (1982). His poetry was informed by the socio-political conditions and injustice of South Africa and articulated a call to resistance. He went to the University of Natal for his M.Phil. in Politics. Poet and editor, he was a founding member of the Mpumalanga Arts Ensemble based in Hammarsdale. In 2007, Gwala received The SALA Literary Lifetime Award. He passed away on 6 September 2014 in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
