Safaa Fathy was born in 1958 in Minya, Egypt. She studied English Literature at the University of Minia and moved to Paris in 1981 where she obtained a PhD from Sorbonne. She has written several books of poetry, including Revolution Goes Through Walls written in the wake of the 2011 Egyptian revolution and A Name to the Sea. Her films include Mohammad Saved from the Waters, a film poem titled Nom à la mer and Derrida’s Elsewhere about the famous philosopher Jacques Derrida with whom she collaborated frequently and shared a close relationship
