Ashur Etwebi was born in 1952 in Tripoli, Libya. He is the author of six poetry collections, including Qsaed Al-Shorfa (Balcony Poems, 1993), Asdiqaoka Maro Min Hu (Your Friends Passed This Way, 2002), and Poems from Above the Hill: Selected Poems of Ashur Etwebi (2011). The poet, novelist and translator’s work reflects the culture, oral tradition and history of Libya. His writing also combines the traditional Libyan art of poetry with modern elements. After the fall of Muammar Gadafi, he played an important role in establishing cultural and literary festivals of Libyan poetry. He received his bachelor’s degree in medicine from Tripoli University in 1980 and his doctorate from University College Galway, Ireland, in 1990. Etwebi was a professor of medicine at the University of Zawia, and he now lives in Norway.
