Robert Berold was born in 1984 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the author of four books of poetry including The Door to the River (1984), The Fires of the Dead (1989), Rain Across a Paper Field (1999) and All the Days (2008). He explores shame, beauty (nature in Eastern Cape) and the complex layers of contemporary South African living. From 1989 to 1999, Berold served as the editor for the poetry journal New Coin. He received his BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand in 1969, and an MA in Economics and English Literature from Cambridge University in 1972. Founder of Deep South Publishing, he focuses on raising funds to encourage writers and publish poetry by South Africans.
