William Charles Scully was born in Ireland and emigrated to South Africa with his family in 1867. He wrote works examining the lives of indigenous peoples of South Africa and organized the building of "New Brighton," a township for Aboriginal African people in Port Elizabeth. Following the Boer War, he investigated war crimes by British forces in the Cape Province.
