Born in South Africa in 1939, Breyten Breytenbach was a poet and activist known for his dissent against South African apartheid. Breytenbach was imprisoned in South Africa in 1975 for high treason. He was released in 1982 and left for Paris, where he received French citizenship. In 2017, he was awarded the Laureate of the Zbigniew Herbert Literary Award.
