Okot p'Bitek was a Ugandan poet known for his long-form poem "Song of Lawino," published in 1966 and originally written in the Acholi dialect of Southern Luo before being translated into English. p'Bitek left Uganda to teach at the University of Iowa in 1969 and remained in exile until 1982.
